Manchester United headline a group of European giants making a highly anticipated return to the elite stage, joining back-to-back champions PSG among the 29 teams already confirmed for the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase. How the remaining seven spots will be filled
The race for the final seven places is split between the Champions Path for domestic league winners from lower-ranked associations and the League Path for runners-up from higher-ranked associations. Qualification has been specifically designed to ensure teams from at least 37 national associations reach the league phase of the Champions League, Europa League or Conference League combined.
Teams eliminated in UCL qualifying drop into the Europa League or Conference League, giving clubs a second chance at European football. Defeated sides in the Champions League and Europa League play-offs advance directly into the league phase of the Europa League and Conference League respectively.

Format: league phase explained
For the third consecutive season, the UEFA Champions League features a 36-team single-league phase, replacing the traditional group stage. Instead of facing three opponents twice, every qualified club plays eight matches against eight different opponents — four at home and four away — determined by a seeding system across four pots.
- Top 8 teams: qualify automatically for the Round of 16.
- 9th to 24th: enter a two-legged knockout play-off for the remaining eight R16 places.
- 25th or lower: eliminated from European competition entirely. No UEL drop.

Five teams to watch
PSG: The French champions arrive as back-to-back winners after edging Arsenal on penalties in the 2026 final. Chasing a historic third straight European crown.
Manchester United: A blockbuster return after three years away. Third-place in the Premier League earns them a place in Pot 2, setting up potential clashes with the elite from the opening draw.
Real Madrid: Record 15-time champions with extra motivation this season — the final is at Madrid’s own Estadio Metropolitano. Anything short of the final would be considered a major disappointment.
Arsenal: Return with unfinished business after pushing PSG to penalties in the 2026 final. Enter as Pot 1 heavyweights and legitimate title contenders.
Como 1907: The tournament’s ultimate wildcard. The Italian club’s extraordinary rise from obscurity to join Inter and Napoli in the league phase is one of football’s greatest recent stories. They qualified directly — no qualifying rounds required.
