CASABLANCA — South Africa have officially secured their passage to the knockout stages of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), snatching a nerve-wracking 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso at the Moulay Rachid Stadium on Tuesday night.
A 21st-minute strike from star forward Thembi Kgatlana proved to be the decisive blow in a performance that was far from vintage, but ultimately got the job done for Desiree Ellis’s side.

South Africa began with clear intent, and in the 21st minute, Kgatlana found space inside the area to fire home her second goal of the tournament.

Substitutes Nicole Ludwig and Ronnel Donnelly both squandered chances to double the lead, while goalkeeper Kaylin Swart was called upon to make crucial late handling saves to protect the clean sheet.

While performance levels will need a major upgrade, South Africa have reached the primary objective of phase one.
The attention now turns to a heavyweight quarter-final encounter against host nation Morocco, a rematch of the 2022 WAFCON final. The stakes could not be higher:
