With just two days to go before England and India create history by playing the first-ever women’s Test at Lord’s, England opener Tammy Beaumont dropped a bombshell, announcing that the match will be the final chapter of her international career.

“The moment I stopped thinking ‘I’ll show you’, I knew it was time”

Beaumont revealed that thoughts of retirement had been brewing since the latter stages of the 50-over World Cup, but being left out of England’s ODI plans earlier this year accelerated the decision. “Being left out of the 50-over setup earlier this year was a blow. But it also felt like the right time to move on and see what’s out there away from international cricket.”

Explaining the defining moment, she added:“When I got dropped this time, I didn’t think, ‘I’ll show you.’ That’s when I knew I was ready to retire.”

Lord’s farewell makes retirement even more special

For Beaumont, finishing her England career at Lord’s carries enormous emotional significance, especially after witnessing the transformation of women’s cricket over the last 17 years.

“I made my debut in 2009 in the West Indies, and the biggest crowd was probably the groundsmen. We sang the national anthem in front of five or six parents. Now, to potentially play a Test at Lord’s in front of 20,000 people shows just how far the game has come.”

She also reflected on childhood memories of Lord’s.

“When I was 13, our coach used to make us run laps around Lord’s as punishment if we dropped too many catches. Now I’m finishing my career by playing a Test here. It’s incredible.”

Calls for more women’s Test cricket

Although she has played only 12 Tests across a 17-year career, Beaumont described the format as her favourite and urged administrators to schedule more matches.

“Test cricket is still the best format. It’s called a Test for a reason. It tests your technique, your mental resolve and your physical resilience.”

She continued:

“We don’t want to play Test cricket as a token gesture. We want enough games that we can really sink our teeth into it and try to master the format.”

Proud of women’s cricket’s growth

Looking back, Beaumont said the biggest change has been the depth of talent now available across international cricket.

“Years ago, you’d pick a player and spend two years developing them. Now England probably has 50 players who could step into the team tomorrow and perform.”

She also stressed the importance of making the women’s game more competitive globally.

“People come to watch good cricket, regardless of gender. We need to keep investing across countries so the standard keeps rising.”

Beaumont now heads into one final assignment, hoping to sign off by helping England defeat India in what promises to be a landmark occasion at the Home of Cricket.
