Against Chippa United, Lungu showed his movement inside the final third before calmly finishing to open the scoring in a 3-0 victory for Orlando Pirates.

But just moments after scoring against Kruger United, Lungu’s dream start turned into a nightmare.

The winger suffered a serious injury and had to leave the pitch. Early assessments suggest it could be a concerning muscle injury.

The timing could not be worse for Orlando Pirates, who are chasing silverware across multiple competitions and have built significant attacking momentum.

Kaizer Chiefs remain unbeaten in the Betway Premiership. They’ll be keen to stay in the upper echelons of the table after a meeting with Siwelele.

Kaizer Chiefs out to preserve unbeaten status

The Glamour Boys are, in the Betway Premiership at least, unbeaten this season. With eight points from 12 on offer, it’s been a solid, if unspectacular start for new boss Fernando Da Cruz. Next up is a home clash with Siwelele on Sunday, 6 September at 15:30. Chiefs will hope for slightly better weather than they endured in a 2-2 draw at Richards Bay. Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, in particular, fell foul to it. The match with Siwelele will be on DSTV channel 202.

Ngcobo to leave Chiefs?

Nkosingiphile Ngcobo’s dismal Chiefs stats merit closer observation. The attacking midfielder hasn’t managed more than two goals in a single season since the 2020-21 campaign. He’s only scored two goals in his last three Betway Premiership seasons combined, and wasn’t involved at all against Sundowns in a recent 1-1 draw. The writing could be on the wall for Mshini after nine years in the senior side. The 26-year-old joined the first team in 2017 from the youth setup. He’s made 129 appearances in the jersey, scoring eight goals and supplying three assists. After featuring in the club’s first two matches of the season (a win over Kruger United and a defeat to Golden Arrows in the MTN8) he hasn’t played a single minute in three subsequent matches. He was an unused sub against Sundowns, and was left out of matchday squads against Richards Bay and Sekhukhune.

While local sport fans will continue to have full access to major sporting events on TV, it seems they are going to have to get used to watching less popular events on live streams.

After the French media giant Canal+ completed its acquisition of Multichoice earlier this year, it was reported that the new owners were eager to cut costs in order to improve profits.

Though it hasn’t been much of an issue yet, SuperSport subscribers have already started feeling the pinch, with the broadcaster opting not to purchase rights for the Winter Olympic Games earlier this year.

And rugby fans might not have access to Super Rugby Pacific games on television next season, with rumours suggesting SuperSport will not renew its broadcast deal.

While local sport fans might not be too concerned about these decisions – the small national team at the Winter Olympics were never going to be challenging for medals, and SA sides no longer compete in the Super Rugby competition – the decision by Canal+ to reduce production costs may already be hitting SA viewers closer to home.

No TV coverage of cricket series

The first match of the ongoing T20 International tri-series in Windhoek – featuring South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe – was scheduled to be shown on SuperSport, but the feed was cut during the opening game last week due to “major technical issues” and none of the remaining matches will be available on TV.

A SuperSport spokesperson said they were unable to provide further details, but it seems the broadcaster opted to take the feed from another company, rather than bidding for the primary broadcast rights and covering the extensive costs of sending its own crew to Windhoek.

Fortunately, that doesn’t mean local cricket fans can’t watch. The International Cricket Council website has been streaming the games, while Cricket South Africa is streaming the remaining matches this week on one of its YouTube channels.

Again, this series is hardly critical for local cricket fans, with a second-string national side facing lower-ranked opposition.

But the fact that it’s not being broadcast on SuperSport is another indication that South Africans might need to become accustomed to watching some events via live streams, rather than higher quality broadcasts on TV.

Le joueur a signé un engagement de trois ans, qui le lie désormais au club anglais jusqu’en juin 2029. Sous les ordres de David Moyes, Maitland-Niles retrouvera un environnement qu’il connaît bien et tentera de s’imposer comme un élément d’expérience au sein de sa nouvelle équipe.

Son départ intervient dans un contexte particulièrement animé du côté de l’OL, qui a également dû gérer plusieurs dossiers importants lors de cette journée de mercato.
