Trabzonspor Reject Fatih Tekke Resignation After European Exit

Trabzonspor have rejected Fatih Tekke’s resignation, confirming that he will remain in charge following their Europa League elimination.

Tekke announced his departure after Trabzonspor lost 4-0 in Budapest on Thursday, completing a 5-0 aggregate defeat in the playoff round.

However, the club’s board described his decision as a reaction to the emotional intensity surrounding the result and formally refused to accept it.

“Fatih Tekke remains in his position as head coach,” Trabzonspor said in a statement. The club added that the 48-year-old will lead the team during Monday’s Süper Lig match away to Amedspor.

Tekke had accepted responsibility for the Ferencváros defeat during his post-match interview and said nobody at the club knew about his decision beforehand.

“As of now, I am resigning from my 18-month role,” Tekke said, “This is the punishment I give myself.” He called the performance “unacceptable” and said defeats belonged to him and his staff.

Trabzonspor’s chances of overturning their 1-0 first-leg deficit suffered an early blow when Ruslan Malinovskyi received a straight red card in the 13th minute.

Ferencváros subsequently scored through Callum O’Dowda, Márius Corbu, Bamidele Yusuf and Krisztián Lisztes. Sidny Lopes Cabral was also dismissed during the second half, leaving Trabzonspor with nine players.

Mohamed Salah started on the right but finished without a goal or assist before Tekke replaced him in the 64th minute.

Trabzonspor will now enter the Conference League after losing both matches against the Hungarian champions without scoring.

Tekke has coached Trabzonspor since March 2025. His existing agreement runs until June 2029, according to the Turkish Football Federation.

Tekke led Trabzonspor to third place in the Süper Lig and won the Turkish Cup last season. He will now continue their domestic campaign against newly promoted Amedspor on August 31.
